KRIT’s latest video premiered on MTV2’s Sucker Free this weekend. But if you didn’t catch it, here it is. Love how this video goes right along with the 4eva N A Day cover art and encapsulates much of the theme of the whole album. I guess that’s why this track is the “theme song.” This creative take is a breath of fresh air in a climate where videos are fairly predictable and overly redundant. Kinda like KRIT’s music. Kudos.

This is the artwork 4 my debut album “Live From The Underground”. It’s a representation of how I feel about underground vs mainstream music. At times I feel like mainstream music operates on a totally different planet. This illustrates how I’ve crash landed into the mainstream to bring the sounds from the underground back 2 the forefront. I want to thank everyone for all their support of my journey so far. Especially Team Big K.R.I.T. and my K4L supporters. I put twitter and facebook backgrounds in here for y’all to put on your pages. It would be an understatement simply to refer to KRIT as a fan of the soulful sounds that dominated the era just before his birth; he’s now much a purveyor of it. Through carefully selected samples, KRIT isolates the blue note in hip-hop while amplifying it in his own soul, loud enough for all of us to hear. It’s an art of improvisation, and it’s one that keeps culture and tradition alive like throwing candy paint on an old school. This is why it’s more than just a car, “it’s a time machine.”

But before 4eva N A Day’s “Me And My Old School” was bumping out of subwoofers across the country, there was Hood Fame’s “Take Care Of Mama.” And of all the soul soothers that KRIT has sampled, there’s Willie Hutch. The connection? Hutch’s “Mother’s Theme”, which can conspicuously be spotted on various other hip-hop productions, as well.

The interesting piece here, however, is to witness how KRIT has grown as an artist; one who produces all of his tracks. Note the evolution in the way that KRIT uses this sample in 2006, and how he uses the same one now in 2012. His own identity is much more apparent now. His ability to pinpoint the sounds he wants us to feel is more refined. His comfort and creativity is audibly refreshing. And lastly, it’s every bit as soulful as it first was in 1973.

Here’s to more Willie Hutch. Here’s to more soul.

Yesterday, KRIT released 4eva N A Day (The Road Less Traveled) for download on iTunes and Amazon. The EP features 4 tracks from 4eva N A Day (presumably the tracks that did not include samples) and 2 additional tracks, “Man on Fire” and “Sideline”. “Sideline” had never been heard or released before and sounds like it just missed the cut for 4eva N A Day. Click the header to stream the track.

Also, KRIT kicks off the College Consciousness Tour with J. Cole today at the University of Rhode Island.

While I’m not too familiar with Exxo and what he’s about, it’s clear that KRIT had his hands all over this track, from the production, to the hook, to the concept. What’s dope to see is that as KRIT becomes more popular, his sound and style will influence a whole class of incoming hip-hop artists, and even some established rappers. That’s a good thing.

While the content here may be the typical money, cars, hoes, KRIT has proven that you don’t need to sacrifice musical depth to tackle perceivably shallow subject matter. He’s also scraped into those subjects in a way that gives them meaning beyond the gloss. It’s clear that a car, to KRIT, is much more than something to floss; he uses it as a representation of his life. The “see my future through my rear view mirror” is a common theme he uses to establish the relationship between where he’s been and where he’s going, all while in his driver’s seat he takes the time to enjoy the plush of the present moment. see: Rotation, Time Machine, Me and My Old School

I judge See Me On Top III to be the transitional marker in KRIT’s career where he moves from being just another cat on the block who can rap and make beats, to a young man who makes music; good music. He finds comfort in his sound and shows that his musical aspirations are more than a dream, but a reality demonstrated not only by his lyrical content, but in the manner that he delivers it.

If there’s one song that’s proof of this, it’s “My Last Time.” I remember introducing a few friends to KRIT and their response after a few songs being, “he sounds hungry.” This is the spirit that attracts so many of us to KRIT; that youthful hunger and determination - the feeling that you need to catch the world on fire while your flame is still hot.

“My Last Time” utilizes a sample from Al Green’s “Something.” The soulful classic was also sampled on KRIT’s track of the same name, which first appeared on See Me On Top III. This is the buildup to K.R.I.T. Wuz Here and the all-in mentality that landed him where he is today. It paid off. And we’re thankful for that.

@paulpennington at the Roy Ayers Project composes this excellent interpretation of 4eva N A Day, the role of Southern hip-hop and how Big K.R.I.T. sits at the centerpiece of it. We need more music genealogy and writing like this in hip-hop. Well done.
